The Swanse Copper Barques and Cape Horners describes the ships, seamen and entrepreneurs who made Swansea one of the world's leading sailing ship ports, and home to more Cape Horners than any other port.
In the 19th century 90% of the world's copper was smelted in Swansea valley. The copper barques brought copper back from all over the world, but mostly their voyages were round the Cape Horn toChile - the most challenging passage a seaman could encounter.
It was always Welsh coal out, not only for copper ore, but guano and nitrates from Chile and Peru, and wheat from San Francisco to Europe and all over the world.
This book comprehensively describes the copper trade, the owners, the ships and how and where they were built, life and conditions at sea, the Cape Horners themselves, and incidents at sea. It concludes with a chapter devoted to the the famous copper barque, Delta, and extracts from the Delta's official logs over thirty years.
It is profusely illustrated, including twelve colour pages.
